 ABOUT

    The tunnel no. 33 is located on Kalka-Shimla railway line. It is a narrow gauge railway that covers a distance of 96 km. The track passes through 102 tunnels in the foothills of Himalayas. These tunnels were built between 1900 to 1903.

    The longest tunnel on this track is the Barog tunnel which is commonly known as Tunnel No. 33. The train took a time of 2.5 minutes when its speed is 25 km/hour. It was made by Colonel Barog, a British Railway Minister, a straightest tunnel in the world. 

    HOW TO REACH THE PLACE :-

        The place is located just at a distance of 60 km from Chandigarh. So, you can visit the place by a private car or a bus, etc. You have to reserve the ticket for the Barog Tunnel if you want to pass through the tunnel. The new tunnel is at a distance of 1 km from the old tunnel.

 

HISTORY

    The Barog Minister, Colonel Barog, did a mistake while constructing the tunnel. He ordered to bore the tunnels from both the opposite ends of the tunnel. The crew started digging it dividing themselves in half. The colonel said after calculating that they would meet in the middle of it. The workers kept on working and the middle point crossed even though they did not meet each other.

    The colonel also realized that he had done a mistake in his calculations and he had fined Rs. 1 by the Government. He was accused of wasting the property of government. The workers and the Colonel became depressed as the tunnel got failed.

    The British Colonel could not digest it and got into depression. Thus, one day when he was roaming with his dog, he shot himself and died. According to some articles, he also shot the dog before. The charge was transferred to H. S. Herlington. After some proper guidance, he constructed it with an expense of Rs. 8.4 lakh.

    After the death of the Colonel, there were rumors that his spirit is lingering around this tunnel. There were also some associated stories with Tunnel No. 46 and Tunnel No. 103.

 

 

 

Claims And Myths

    His spirit is said to be harmless and friendly who did not want to harm anyone there. People had seen the spirit of him in or around the tunnel. There is also claim that he also talked with the locals living there freely. People here are damn sure that there is something mysterious in the darkness of tunnel. The government also tried sealing the incomplete tunnel but every time the lock was found broken. Thus, the tunnel is quite mysterious with its damp and wet walls.
