 ABOUT

    The South Park Street Cemetery is located on Mother Teresa Sarani, Kolkata, India. The cemetery was opened in 1767 on a marshland to take off some load of the old Burial Ground in Kolkata. The road used to be called Park Street, and prior to that Burial Ground Road. South Park Cemetery is one of the oldest cemetery in the world.

 

    It is a non-church cemetery of the 18th century. It is now maintained by the Archeological Survey of India as it is considered among the heritage sites in Kolkata. The charm that draws the tourists are the tombs that are aesthetically beautiful and attractive.

 

    Some Tombs of the cemetery have mysterious vibe. One such Tomb is the grave number 363 which is the oldest and belongs to a woman who never wished to have her name revealed. The location has also been featured in several Bengali and Tollywood movies like Gorosthaney Sabdhan, which is a movie based on a novel written by Satyajit Ray.

 

    The marble plaque on the gate says that this graveyard stop being used in 1790 but it was completely abandoned in 1830. When it closed there were over 1600 graves and tombs.

        From Park Street Metro Station is around 1.5 Kilometers. From Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport (Kolkata Airport) is 16 Kilometers. 

HISTORY

    The South Park Street Cemetery has a really haunted experiences and so it is also known as "Haunted Grave".

 

     It is claimed that there is a Pyramid shaped tomb that bleeds out blood during the monsoon months. Hence it is named as "Bleeding Tomb". It is believed that the Dennison family is resting below the tomb whose family members died one by one mysteriously with no reason known till date.

 

    The grave number 363 has a mysterious story. The dead anonymous person was against expressing her name. Hence “A Virtuous Mother” died 1825, is encrypted on her grave.

 

Claims And Myths

1.    A group of friends planned to visit South Park Street cemetery.But after sometime all of them started feeling that their health was getting worsen. One of them also had asthma attack. They all got terrified after that incidence.
